Great post!

I'd also take a long look at some of Claudia Chaufan's work on the utility of these kinds of studies for social policy. (She's quite skeptical in general).

Great post -- it matters so much for issues of social policy. Consider Jason Fletcher's provocative paper from last year "Why Have Tobacco Control Policies Stalled? Using Genetic Moderation to Examine Policy Impacts" where he argues: "Variation in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor was found to moderate the influence of tobacco taxation on multiple measures of tobacco use. Individuals with the protective G/G polymorphism (51% of the sample) responded to taxation while others had no response." Especially as the pool of smokers winnows, the influence of genetics on who the remaining smokers are is likely to get stronger. Don't you think? http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0050576

I also blogged about this the other week, but under a completely different (misleading?) title - given that we don't always get a chance to read each other's stuff in busy periods, I'm surprised it hasn't happened before! But it gives everyone a chance to see if we have the same take on it anyway :-)

I have some issues with how they measure trust in the government and the size of the effect so I would withhold judgment here. Also their treatment is super ideologically oriented, would be nice to see the effect of information about inequality seen through a conservative lens, does it turn people against taxing the top? more importantly provides micro-evidence for the two dimensions Kris-Stella Trump and I found for the UK and mentioned in an earlier post: redistribution away from the rich is different from redistribution to the poor.
